EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE 


1994 – 1996  – studied in Bălți medical college.

1996  – 2002  – studied General Medicine in Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova.

2002 – 2004 – residentship at the Department of Urology of the I. M. Sechenov Moscow State Medical Academy.

2004 г. – 2008 г. – PhD studies at the Department of Urology of the I. M. Sechenov Moscow State Medical Academy.

2008 г. – PhD thesis defense (The effects of vitamins, antioxidants, and phytoestrogens on risk of the development of prostate cancer).

Since 2010, D. V. Butnaru has been actively working on the issues of reconstructive urogenital surgery (urethral strictures, in particular).

2011 – traineeship at The Center for Reconstructive Urethral Surgery in Arezzo, Italy, under supervision of its Head, Professor Guido Barbagli.

2011 – 2012 – Head of the Surgical Department at the Urological Clinic of the I. M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

2012 – 2015 – In 2012, D. V. Butnaru became the Head of the Department of Reconstructive-Plastic Uronephrology at the Uronephrology Research Institute of the I. M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

2012 г. – second traineeship at The Center for Reconstructive Urethral Surgery in Arezzo, Italy, under supervision of its Head, Professor Guido Barbagli.

2013 г. – traineeship at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, NC, USA, under supervision of its Director, Professor Anthony Atala.

2013 г. – D. V. Butnaru conducted the first tissue-engineered urethral substitution in patient with bulbar urethral stricture.

2014 г. – traineeship at the Center for Reconstructive Urogenital Surgery, Belgrad, Serbia under supervision of its Director, Professor Rados Djinovic.

Since 2015 D. V. Butnaru is an Associate Professor of the Department of Urology at the I. M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

In June 2015 D. V. Butnaru was appointed as the Deputy Director of Research of the Uronephrology Research Institute.

In September 2016 D. V. Butnaru was appointed as the Director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IRM).

2016 – second traineeship at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, NC, USA, under supervision of its Director, Professor Anthony Atala.

2016 – official visit to the University of Cambridge, the United Kingdom, for the purpose of establishing ties with leading specialists in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering and studying more about the organization of research and education at one of the world’s top universities.

2017 – 2019 - Director of Sechenov Biomedical Science & Technology Park.

2018 – 2019 - D. V. Butnaru studied at Harvard Medical School (Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program)

2019 – 2022 - D. V. Butnaru was a Vice-Rector for Research at Sechenov University.

2023 - Vice-Rector for International Affairs at Sechenov University.

2024 - Chief Physician, University Clinical Hospital No. 1, Sechenov University

Surgical interests

  • Reconstructive surgery of the urethra. All types of urethroplasty:
    • Anastomotic urethroplasty
      • Urethra-urethral anastomosis
      • Urethra-prostatic anastomosis (incl. Webster’s operation)
  • Anastomotic augmented urethroplasty
  • Buccal mucosa urethroplasty in patients with anterior urethra strictures
  • Muscle sparing techniques in patients with bulbar urethra strictures
  • Penile reconstructive surgery
    • In patients with congenital penile curvature
    • In patients with Peyronie’s disease
    • Penile prosthesis with one- and three-component implants in patients with severe organic erectile dysfunction
    • Implantation of an artificial urinary sphincter in male patients with severe urinary incontinence
    • Implantation of TVT-O loop in female patients with stress urinary incontinence
    • Urethral transposition in female patients with post-coital cystitis
    • Circumcision, frenuloplasty, surgical treatment of hydrocele, spermatocele, etc.
    • Marmar microsurgical varicocelectomy

  • Reconstructive surgery of the urethra (incl. muscle  sparing techniques)
  • Tissue engineering in urethral strictures
  • Cellular therapy of bladder collum sclerosis
  • Cellular therapy of urinary incontinence in male patients after radical prostatectomy
  • 3D-bioprinting in urology
